Steve Jobs commissioned his engineers to look into the development of touchscreens, Apple developed the iPhone during a undercover and unheard of collaboration with AT&T Mobility, who were named Cingular Wireless at the time. The costs of the iPhone project were estimated to be in the region of US$150 million over two and a half years.

Jobs unveiled his baby to the world in January 2007 during a keynote address, speculation as to when the iPhone would go on general sale was rife. Apple finally launched the iPhone 2G in July of 2007 in the USA to critical acclaim, the iPhone was heralded as a huge success, it’s integration with iTunes made is popular with iPod fans who made the switch to the iPhone for their main cellular phone. Apple finally launched their new phone in the UK, France and Germany during November 2007, perfect timing for the Christmas rush.

The timing of the launch ensured that the shelves would remain empty driving the desirability levels through the roof, the iPhone 2G was the must have device of 2007.

The iPhone 2G remains popular today due to its casing design, the back was finished in a nice aluminium that is no longer found in later models.

It’s probably near on impossible to buy an iPhone 2G anymore, most retailers are pushing the 3G and 3GS. It is although still possible to buy the 2G from stores such as Used iPhones. There are a whole host of pristine condition 2G phones to buy online. So don’t fear, you can still buy your own piece of Apple history.
